IN MEMORY OF

ESTUARDO MATA PALMIERI (1975-2017)

Estuardo’s journey in the legal profession began in 1993 when he decided to join the Francisco Marroquín University to pursue a law degree.

While in the university, Estuardo did a three year internship where he participated in domestic and international mediation, arbitration and alternative dispute resolution, as well as commercial litigation, unfair competition and confidentiality violations.

After completing his studies, Estuardo began working as an associate in the dispute resolution department of a Guatemalan law firm focusing in tax and complex debt collection, foreclosures, insolvency and bankruptcy cases.

In 2001, Estuardo joined QIL Abogados as an associate where he further developed his extensive knowledge in commercial arbitration, mediation and alternative dispute resolution methods. He became the head of the Litigation Department and in 2009 a named partner of QIL Abogados (Quiñones, Ibargüen, Luján & Mata, S.C. / QIL Abogados), and continued as such after QIL Abogados and 4 Abogados merged into QIL+4 Abogados in 2015.

Estuardo was a successful trial attorney representing local and foreign clients in commercial, civil and criminal litigation. His skills as a negotiator also made him participate in domestic and international commercial arbitration panels and tribunals from very early stages on of his career.  He was a Designee Arbitrator for the Dispute Resolution Center of the Guatemalan Chamber of Industry (CRECIG), and served as arbitrator in commercial arbitration cases at CRECIG and at the Arbitration and Conciliation Center of the Guatemalan Chamber of Commerce (CENAC), both of which are the most prestigious and respected arbitration and dispute resolution centers in Guatemala.

His passion for law was also reflected in the academia. In 2004 he became professor of “Analytical Jurisprudence” at the Francisco Marroquín University Law School (UFM). In 2011 he also became professor of “Procedural Theory” and “Civil Jurisprudence” at UFM and “Civil Procedure and Commercial Law” at the Universidad del Istmo. He was a frequent lecturer on issues related to alternative dispute resolutions methods, civil, commercial and criminal procedure. At the time of his passing, Estuardo taught “Procedural Theory” at Francisco Marroquín University Law School and was deeply respected by his colleagues, as well as past and current students.

The Dean of the Francisco Marroquín University Law School, Milton Estuardo Argueta PhD, said about Estuardo that “we will keep the memory of a young, brilliant and impetuous lawyer: passionate about his work, he enjoyed litigating just as much as an athlete enjoys a good competition.”
